The TRIO Data Collectors / Field Analyzers support a variety of sensor inputs. Though packaged with the preferred, triaxial accelerometer, the TRIO use different sensor types to collect data. Often other sensors will require an adapter to connect to the M-12 input port of the Data Processor. Symphony Industrial AI has several options to satisfy your specific needs. As a result, this article helps to explain how to setup your TRIO Data Collector application (Collector or CollectorX) to accommodate this flexible use type.

Triaxial vs Single-axis Sensor Modes
The TRIO will collect all three channels of vibration data simultaneously when in triaxial mode. When the single-axis sensor mode is selected, the application will collector data through only one sensor input channel.
M-12 to 4BNC or M-12 to 1BNC Adapter Cables
This is the most common adapter used for programs that have single channel sensors permanently connected to machinery through a junction box.
To determine if you need to switch to single-axis mode depends on if you need to move a BNC channel during the collection at a location or manipulate a switch to change a channel on the box.
If all locations at one location can be captured simultaneously, meaning the location on the machine may only have one channel or you have multiple BNC connectors which can all be connected to at the same time, then the triax mode is used. After you connect your adapter to the panel, in triax mode, the data collector will collect all assigned channels (see below) at the same time.
If the machine location has multiple single-axis sensor that must be collected one-at-a-time, then the single-axis sensor mode must be turned on. The software will prompt the user to collect the described location and direction on screen then pause for the sensor or junction box change for each subsequent channel directions.
M-12 to M-12 plus BNC Adapter Cable
For users who often need to switch between using a triaxial sensor and connecting to a junction box with a BNC adapter, the M-12 to M-12 plus BNC adapter is the best solution. This cable removes the need to unscrew the triaxial sensor from the Data Processor each time a single channel location is needed. The adapter keeps both the triax and a BNC cable attached to the TRIO Data Processor throughout the data collection process.
The channel assigned to the BNC with this specific adapter cable is channel 4. This is different than the default, channel 1, that is typically used with other BNC adapters. When connecting to a junction box or using an attached single channel sensor with this adapter, the user will need to change the channel mode to Channel 4. This can be set in the Options menu or from the button that is on the main screen.
Single-axis Channel 1 vs Single-axis Channel 4 vs Triax Mode
Use Channel 1 when using the M-12 to 1BNC or M-12 to 4BNC adapter and only one channel at a time or one direction at a time will be gathered.
Use Channel 4 when using the M-12 to M-12 plus BNC adapter cable and using the single channel input.
Use Triaxial Sensor mode (uncheck Single-axis Sensor Mode) when multiple channels of data will be gathered simultaneously. This could be with triax sensor or with single channel sensor or sensors if the location setup is applicable.
It should be noted, when using Ch 4 as the default channel to collect from a junction box, Ch 4 performs both the cable fault test and apply settling time. However, only channel 1 has the sensor disconnection detection feature, meaning CH 4 will only do both of those things when ICP power is first enabled on that channel. It will cable check Ch 4 on first use but not again on subsequent measurements unless route settings or user changes ICP state on Channel 4.

Assigned Channels - Machine Location Setup
The machine location setup indicates which of the three directions of data are required. It is important to consider the setup when determining if single-channel mode is required. A setup could only require one direction selected, in which case the triax mode could be left enabled though a single channel sensor is connected. The triax mode merely collects all required locations simultaneously. Thus if only one or two location are required, and they can be captured through the applicably-assigned single channel sensor(s), then triax mode is adequate.
Regarding applicable channel assignment, the ALERT application uses an orientation standard or channel 1, channel 2, and channel 3 per a three letter orientation selection. The analyst who sets up the location orientation will need to match the direction to the single channel number assignment during setup. Meaning if only needing vibration in the horizontal plane, and the collector will use channel 1 to collect this, the orientation selection must have H (Horizontal) in the first position of the three-letter orientation setting (HAV or HVA). The ALERT and Collection software will ignore the other locations as long as they are unchecked (not assigned) in the Machine Location setup.
