4. Sensor Placement, Orientation, Wireless S/N

Welcome back!  This is step 2 of 2 for the RPS user in setting up assets for vibration analysis with the Remote Setup application in conjunction with the SymphonyAI Industrial (SAII) analyst assistance.  Click here for step 1.

Before you begin, please read the Getting Started page to review the workflow.

Introduction

This step finalizes the asset setup by relaying to the RPS user the SAII analyst's recommended sensor placement and orientation as well as enabling the wireless serial number association to the asset location.

This section covers the second of two steps.  During step 1, data was gathered about the asset.  This data included nameplates and photos as well as basic component information from which the SAII analyst used to create the Expert Automated Diagnostic System (EADS) template, vibration collection parameters, and finally asset and location settings within the ExpertALERT software.

Sensor / Attachment Pad Placement

  1. Open the RPS app, log in with the credentials provided by SAII.
  2. Synchronize the latest asset information by selecting "Sync" from the menu options.

Note:  The SAII Program Administrator will notify the RPS User when the setup is complete and ready to proceed with sensor or attachment pad placement.
  3. Select the Plant, Area, and Machine that is to be setup.

  4. Review updated photos.  The SAII analyst will update the machinery photos to indicate the locations for sensors or pad placement.  The image will reference the orientation for the sensor.  This information is also presented in the Locations and Sensors section for the asset.

  5. Review the Locations & Sensors section.  This section is the desired configuration as defined by the analysts and setup for the EADS software.  This includes the bearing location for which the sensor/pad is to be installed and orientation as defined by the analyst.

Important Note:  Deviation from the location and orientation could result in erroneous diagnostic results for the machine.  If changes must be made to install or accommodate the vibration sensor, contact the program manager for directions on completing the installation.
  6. Install the sensor or pad:
    1. Identify the sensor location and orientation on the machine per the RPS app as visualized in the photo and expressly written in the Locations and Sensors section.
Note: To understand location, bearing numbers, and orientation nomenclature (RAT, TRA, AHV, VAH, etc.) please refer to this article.
    2. Ensure the sensor or pad location is as close the the bearing as possible and on solid metal foundation.  Sensors cannot be installed on guards, shrouds, fins, etc.
    3. Prepare the surface of the machine and install the pad or sensor using a two-part adhesive as referenced in this article for installing attachment pads or sensors.
    4. Notify SAII Program Manager if deviations are required.
  7. Finalize any changes by performing a sync.

Assigning a Wireless Sensor to a Location

This section associates the serialized wireless sensor to the specific location on the asset.

The serial number can be associated using a Near Field Communication (NFC) input if your Android device supports NFC technology.  Alternatively, the QR code on the sensor could also be scanned using the mobile app.  Finally, the physical serial number could also be entered into the text input field.

Note that this serial number is very small on the label and accuracy is highly important to ensure proper setup.  Associating the serial number may be easiest to accomplish before the sensor is placed on the machine.  Again, make sure the proper serialized sensor is entered and installed to its associated asset location.

  1. Power on the wireless sensor if not already on.  Refer to this article if required.
  2. Locate the Wireless Serial Number field in the Locations and Sensor section of the asset on the RPS app.
Note:  if the Wireless Serial Number field is not present, make sure "Wireless" is set for the data acquisition type in the General section for the asset.
  3. Set the serial number for the applicable location:
    1. QR code:  click the QR icon and then scan the QR code on the side of the sensor until the field is populated.
    2. NFC beacon:  ensure NFC in enabled on your Android device. Click the NFC icon and then scan the top of the wireless sensor until the field is populated.
    3. Manual entry:  click the input field and type the serial number as it appears on the wireless sensor.
  4. Finalize the serialized settings by performing one final sync.
